The La Mouette Twitterati party in the sweltering December heat produced massive hangovers in Casa Batonage interspersed by that happy fuzziness that winning something produces: A gift voucher for an overnight stay at Hout Bay Manor.
We waited for the less-than-busy season to visit and by sheer (more) good fortune our stay also coincided with one of their renowned wine dinners (partnered by D’Aria Winery and marketed by Siris Vintners). I am pleased to report that we could not fault anything about our stay; from parking upon arrival to check out, the only thing I needed was more Myprodol to nurse my hangover – a sure sign of an excellent evening at Pure Restaurant (the fabulous in-house restaurant at Hout Bay Manor) and good food and wine.
The beautiful Manor & the welcoming pool area with immaculate poolside trimmings
A spot of history about the building: The Manor is a listed historical building, built in 1871 by Jacob Trautmann in the traditional Cape Dutch style. It has been gracefully restored to its former elegance over an 18 month period and the 5-star Hout Bay Manor was reopened on 26 October 2007.
Not a bar counter you can dance on but the seating is pretty comfortable
The FUN communal lounge area & more fun in the bathroom
Upon entering the building you are transported into a magical world (designed by Cecile & Boyd’s) where anything is possible: from old school metal bowls turned into a gorgeous lamp stand dominating the reception area to self-help Liquorice Allsorts stations outside your door; nothing is too strange! It is simply fabulous.
The bed is comfortable, the wireless works, the water pressure is sufficient and the hot water is h-o-t. Add a wine list that has Paul Roger NV Champagne available and a super friendly barman that delivers it to your room (or poolside or the spa; whatever your desire) and you have a winning recipe. THIS is 5 star; pure and simple.
Everything you need in your room
Pure Restaurant & a Breakfast spread worthy of Royalty
I could continue waxing lyrical about the place and the people, but will let the photographs do the talking. Whatever reason you have for visiting Hout Bay Manor, you will have to click your heels together twice to get home. Magic happens there…
Breakfast…with an impeccable view & superb Eggs Benedict
