The places we eat at: El Burro Taqueria

Had to go to Wikipedia to learn about Taqueria’s:  “Taquería (pronounced: [takeɾ’ia]) is a Spanish word meaning taco shop or place that makes tacos.  As tacos are an integral part of traditional Mexican cuisine, shops selling them have proliferated throughout Mexico and other areas with a heavy Mexican culinary and cultural influence…More typical taquerías specialize in tacos, as expected, but in some localities it can be used to refer to restaurants specializing in burritos, where tacos themselves are less of a point of emphasis. Originally, a taquería could only be a street vendor; however, today many taquerías are restaurants that occupy buildings.”

Here I thought this was just a smaller, cuter version of the awesome El Burro in Greenpoint!  The menu is a paired down version of the one we know and love – you can now order the Chilli Rellenos in singles (R15 each) and there are a few new additions like the Esquites (R25) and delicious Chicarrons (R23 – pork scratcings with chilli salt).

The venue is light and airy with a great view of Kloof Neck’s urban hustle and Lion’s Head looming in the distance – a  perfect urban “quick meal” spot – which I assume is why it’s called a Taqueria.  Tacos on offer are the usual beef , chicken, or pork  with a fish, chilorio pork (my absolute favourite) and vegetarian option.  Prices for the tacos range from R30.
